ABOUT

Ambient Studio

Ambient Studio is a progressive, innovative and explorative RIBA Chartered Practice, delivering architectural design projects across the domestic residential, developer-led residential, hospitality and public-realm sectors, executing sustainable and contemporary retrofit and new-build projects.

We are specialists in both appraising the feasibility and realising the development potential of sites and properties, be that small intricate backland sites, larger urban and rural sites, or existing homes and properties.

Founded in 2019, Ambient Studio is a London-based practice. Our name - Ambient - arrives from a deep rooted mission to develop designs which are contextual and of their surroundings, evoke atmosphere and a sense of place, and break free from traditional composition in favour of innovative, novel approaches. Every project response is different, yet this core mission remains consistent.

Each project brings us together with like-minded organisations, enterprising communities, and imaginative individuals who resonate with our creative and strategic way of thinking, communicating and designing.

All our Architects are fully RIBA trained and ARB accredited.

How We Work

Interrogate, Ideate, Iterate & Illustrate

We interrogate every brief with meticulous listening, inquisitive discussion and creative interpretation of site and context.

We ideate freely and conceptually through communal discourse, seeking innovative approaches and novel solutions.

We refine and develop our designs incrementally and iteratively with strategic pragmatism and playful curiosity.

We illustrate our schemes meticulously, narrating our ideas with conviction and communicating our details with clarity.

We work with a wide range of client types, from those with aspirational commercial objectives, to those with creative domestic or social ambitions, from individuals to organisations, public and private.

Whilst each project follows the same process of Interrogate, Ideate, Iterate & Illustrate, every project assumes its own journey, with each approach differing according to the client, their brief, their site and their budget.

Practice Values

Our Guiding Principles

Throughout every project, we abide by our Practice Values, these being our guiding principles that predicate our beliefs, our methods, and our output across all projects, irrespective of size or sector.

Communication

Effective communication is at the core of every project, so we understand you, and you understand us.

  • Before pen touches paper, we always start by asking questions and listening deeply, with a genuine desire to understand you, your aspirations, and your limitations.
  • We encourage questions, and recognise our responsibility to educate our clients at every stage throughout a project.
  • We establish communication boundaries for all parties at the outset of each project, to encourage a healthy life balance for all, and in turn maximise efficiency, focus and productivity during work hours.
  • We ensure regular communication is upheld, and we set up and maintain reliable systems allowing clients to readily refer back to key project information and discussions.
  • We rely on clear communication and exceptional presentation to illustrate our proposals effectively. This is essential for attaining client approval, statutory consent, and ensuring clarity on site.
Collaboration

Architectural design is a collaborative and participatory process, where buildings, places and spaces are enriched by the insights, skills and expertise of the many.

  • We cultivate both a studio and project environment where everybody is encouraged to feel confident and emboldened in sharing their views.

  • We don’t shy away from disagreements where expressed respectfully, as these can be a healthy and essential part of collaboration and critical thinking. We do however discourage ego-led competition, tunnel-vision thinking, and antagonistic behaviours.

  • We encourage everybody to take the time to listen with an intention to understand, learn and move forward in a collective direction.

  • We love working with specialist collaborators and consultants who uphold similarly high standards, as the best ideas and solutions are often born through conversation with those who see the project through a contrasting lens.

  • We seek expertise, passion and skills to create the best possible project team.
Focus

We work hard and we work focused. We maintain direction and momentum, and as a team, we take satisfaction from this drive.

  • We foster an environment where our staff can be focused and productive, allowing them to leave satisfied each day. This is how we discourage overtime, encourage a healthy work / life balance.

  • We manage our time, and we take our deadlines seriously. When we make a promise, we deliver on it, and our clients value our reliability and dedication. We strategise wherever and whenever needed.

  • We focus on one task at a time, and we execute it at the highest possible standard. We avoid multi-tasking. When communicating, we give our full attention.

  • If it can be done today, we do it. We do not leave things until tomorrow. This way we stay on the front foot, always acting to stay ahead.
Impact

We design to inspire positive change to the environmental and social context in which our projects sit, whilst successfully bettering the life of our clients.

  • Our work is always contextual and respective of its surroundings, evokes atmosphere and a sense of place, and favours innovative solutions and novel approaches.

  • We combine innovative, intelligent and contextual, strategic idea-based thinking with aesthetic and material exploration.

  • We recognise the importance of environmentally conscious design within an increasingly desperate world, and every project carries a responsibility to improve the environmental, social and community context.

  • We encourage research, testing and exploration at every stage, be that during the conceptual design, or the technical detailing of a project.

  • We strive to be conscious of the effects of our work our working processes, and we are deliberate with our subsequent choices.

  • We establish core project aspirations at the start of each project, and we implement routine project reviews to ensure the project remains suitably ambitious and on track in delivering accordingley.
Growth

We are all work-in-progress, ever developing and ever improving with each day. As such, we each recognise our role in one another’s growth.

  • We do not let ourselves stand still. Instead, we implement systems for regularly educating and bettering ourselves, both as individuals and as a collective company.

  • We build strong team communication and support.

  • We create and maintain a culture where ideas are shared amongst the studio.

  • We implement a structured training programme comprising well rounded and impactful educational sessions.

  • We value staff retention, and with it, the collective growth of the company.

  • We do not withhold valuable learnings, and instead we value sharing knowledge.
Enjoyment

Our work is fun, lively and uplifting, and our projects are playful, team-oriented endeavours which excite and delight.

  • We seek joy in each moment. Work for us is fulfilling, fun, satisfying and rewarding. This is how we get the best from ourselves, and this is how we ensure our people enjoy working with us.

  • Without failure, there can be no success. Our studio is a safe space for honest mistakes, where brave conceptual failures are to be celebrated.

  • Our studio practices with a shared ethos that positive emotions trump negative emotions, where confidence trumps fear, and where an open expression of ideas is welcomed.

  • Every project provides the opportunity to be creative, dynamic in thought, innovative and original. Ir provides scope to explore new ideas and learn new things.

  • We look forward to design workshops and encourage cross-table engagement. They open up heathy debate, thought-provoking discussion, and lead to iterative schematic improvements.

  • We maintain a social studio culture, within and outside of work.

We love getting specific with the needs of each of our clients, so whatever the project, our scope is always tailored to meet yours and you project’s needs.
