Sat upon the first floor of a beautiful terraced townhouse in Islington, the single-bedroom dwelling suffered from awkwardly small spaces, a disproportionate amount of circulation space and a dated decor. The client sought to modernise the interior aesthetic whilst reappraising the functionality of the flat.
Initial studies appraised the capacity for reconfiguration through assessing the composition of structural versus non-structural walls, further highlighting the spatial inefficiencies arising from the separated bathroom and toilet room and circulation space between, this resulting in an awkwardly small kitchen and living space, unbefitting to the large voluminious potential of the once elaborate townhouse property.
Through incorporating the absorbing the bathroom space into the kitchen, and sequentially creating a combined en-suite shower room in lieu of the surplus circulation space, the flat was reconfigured to create fewer, yet larger and more functional spaces, connected with maximum efficiency and simplicity. Most notably, a beautiful kitchen / living space opens up entirely, redefining the living experience within the property.
Large traditional sash window openings frame the ever-changing views of the vibrant, lush swaying tree canopies from each room. This characteristic defined a new naturalistic material palette throughout, where light engineered wood flooring and oak shelving and doors combine with soft delicate earthy tones. A bold, full-height black fronted kitchen mimicks the opposing bold presence of the original cast iron fireplace, further influencing the black bathroom hardware to the en-suite. Golden accents bring warmth throughout in the form of cabinetry handles and door hardware.
Given the limited floor area yet the generous height throughout, intelligent storage was afforded at high-level to allow the spaces to remain uncluttered, clean and spacious.
A soft naturalistic material palette creates a calming sense of place
Large glass pendent lights throughout emphasise the open airy space within which they sit
Full-height kitchen cabinetry maximises storage, whilst successfully concealing the retained boiler and associated pipework
Shimmering glazed green kitchen tiling brings natural light into the flat whilst harmonising with the fluttering tree canopy beside
Black cabinetry combines with the original cast iron fireplace and new bathroom hardware to create a distinct, contemporary aesthetic, whilst brass accents in the form of cabinetry handles and door hardware bring a touch of warmth and delight
